MYTH: Plasma TVs actually have a shorter lifespan than LCD TVs.
FACT: Panasonic VIERA Plasma and LCD panels both boast a long service life. In fact the PZ700 series has a life span of approximately 100,000 hours* which when watched for 8 hours a day gives a long service life of more than 30 years.
* Number of hours until the panel's brightness is reduced to half its initial level, based on operation in the standard mode with dynamic content.
MYTH: I heard that burn-in is a problem with Plasma TVs.
FACT: Burn-in isn't going to happen from normal use. It will only happen under the highly rare condition that a high contrast image is constantly displayed for a very long time. Even the TV networks' logos are generally now a low contrast image.
MYTH: Plasma TVs consume considerably more power.
FACT: LCD TVs use a backlight system that constantly uses power to light the screen independent of the image being displayed. Plasma panels on the other hand only consume power when each individual cell is illuminated; therefore power consumption is variable dependent upon the scene being viewed. As an example, in darker scenes considerably less power is consumed than in bright scenes.
MYTH: Aren't LCD TVs brighter and easier to see because of the backlight?
FACT: It's true that LCD TVs can look bright in an abnormally lit store. Plasma TVs produce exceptionally vivid images in the ambient lighting conditions of the living room. LCD TVs that use a fluorescent backlight can suffer from light leakage because the backlight is always on. As a result blacks in some instances may appear to look washed out or grey.
MYTH: I read that some LCD manufacturers claim trillions of colours.
FACT: Panasonic Full HD VIERA Plasma produces 68.7 billion viewable colours. Some other manufacturers may be quoting back-end processing colours that are not necessarily viewable on screen. When it comes to colour reproduction, Plasma TV is the ultimate choice.

ContrastWhen you are choosing your ultimate TV, it's important to 'try before you buy', because no amount of research or hype can replace the simple experience of watching a TV in action. While this sounds as simple as it is sensible, we would suggest that as you view and compare TVs in a store, keep in mind the following points:
The lighting in the store is typically several times brighter than that of the average home. A Plasma screen that does not appear bright in a store may well turn out to be perfectly suited to the darker, ambient conditions of your living room. An LCD screen that looks clear in the store could turn out to be unrealistically bright when you get it home - what seemed a strength in the store may turn out to be a weakness at home. Remember, you watch TV at home not in a store.
If you are comparing LCD and Plasma TVs side-by-side, ask the assistant to ensure that both are receiving the same source signal and that the connection type is the same (HDMI to HDMI or component to component). Also, try to view a number of different types of content, especially movies and sport, as it's with these that the differences appear between the technologies - specifically response times and contrast ratios.
The optimum viewing experience for a large flat screen TV is not right up against the screen. When you are comparing screens in-store, take a step back and view them from a distance, as you would in your home.
Make sure that you view the screens from different angles. Not every seat in your home will be directly in front of the screen, and you want to make sure that the picture retains its quality when viewed from different angles.
Numbers referencing television specifications, such as contrast (native or dynamic) and colours (viewable on screen or back-end processing, which may not be viewable on screen) are not all measured in the same way! When comparing numbers you may not be comparing like for like. To make a fair comparison Panasonic encourages you to view the products side by side with the same connection type and signal under conditions that match your viewing habits.
