Bastard pop is a musical genre which, in its purest form, consists of the combination (usually by digital means) of the music from one song with the acapella from another. Typically, the music and vocals belong to completely different genres. At their best, bastard pop songs strive for musical epiphanies that add up to considerably more than the sum of their parts.

Synonyms

Bastard pop is known by a number of different names, including:

* Bootlegs (AKA Boots or Booties)
* Mashups (or Mash-ups)
* Illegitimate Pop
* Blends
* Cutups (or Cut-ups)

In addition, more traditional terms such as "edits" or (unauthorised) "remixes" are favoured by many "bootleggers" (also known as 'leggers).
[edit]

History

Though the term "bastard pop" first became popular in 2001, the practice of assembling new songs from purloined elements of other tracks stretches back at least to the '50s, and, if one extends the definition beyond the realm of pop, precursors can be found in Musique concrète, as well as the classical practice of (re-)arranging traditional folk material and the jazz tradition of reinterpreting standards.

----

A bootleg recording is a musical recording, distributed for profit or other financial compensation, that was not officially released by the artist (or their associated management or production companies), or under other legal authority.

Some artists consider any release for which they do not receive royalties to be equivalent to a bootleg, even if it is an officially licensed release. This is often the case with artists whose recordings have either become public domain or whose original agreements did not include reissue royalties (which was a common occurrence in the 1950s and before).

----

As a noun, bootleg means the top part of a boot, the part that is around the leg instead of the foot. From the practice of hiding small items in a boot to smuggle them past the authorities, the word became a verb, meaning "to smuggle", and an adjective, describing something that has been smuggled (or, more rarely, stolen). The term bootleg can refer to:

* A musical recording taped without the artist's consent. See bootleg recording
* A piece of music which contains unlicensed samples. See bastard pop
* An alcoholic beverage sold without regard to legal regulations and taxes. See bootleg liquor
* A pirate radio station
* A counterfeit piece of merchandise
* A tactic in American football. See bootleg play
* Bootleg is also a cheap copy of a movie. It can be a theatre showing that is recorded by video camera and then re-sold. With the technology development of DVDs, now "bootleggers" are decoding DVDs and are making cheap but higher quality copies.

Common bootleg characteristics: fuzzy or tilted picture, heads moving in theater, or sounds of laughter or talk not from the film.

Usually "bootleggers" will sell this cheap copy for $2-5 undercutting the cost at stores. You can find bootlegs in urban communities mainly through street vendors, festivals, flea markets, and barbershops.

>> Så med andre ord er bootleg generalt set lavet uden nogens tilladelse. Dette behøver ikke gælde for bastard-pop men oftest kan det stilles lig med hinanden. Derfor har du delvist fat i det rigtige. Det hænder da også at bootlegs bliver lavet officelle/udgivet "by popular demand"

De to nedenstående url's giver meget mere info omkring hele genren, også f.eks. mash-up's
Personligt synes jeg selv at udgivelserne "2 Many DJ's" er noget af det bedste inden for genrerne. De er officielle udgivelser og jeg vil især gerne anbefale albummet "As Heard On Radio Soulwax". Men det er et sidespring.
